The Chemical Compositions of Stars with Planets: A Review

چکیده

A number of trends among the properties of exoplanets have become evident in the years since the first one was announced in 1995. One particularly interesting trend began to emerge in 1997 – the incidence of giant planets correlates with the metallicity of the host star. This has since been established with a high degree of statistical significance by several research groups. Other, more subtle, trends are beginning to appear as the sample size continues to grow and the statistics improve. I review the state of our knowledge concerning the observed compositional trends and their possible causes and suggest several research directions. Subject headings: stars:abundances

Planetary accretion in the inner Solar System

Unlike gas-giant planets, we lack examples of terrestrial planets orbiting other Sun-like stars to help us understand how they formed. We can draw hints from elsewhere though. Astronomical observations of young stars; the chemical and isotopic compositions of Earth, Mars and meteorites; and the structure of the Solar System all provide clues to how the inner rocky planets formed. These data hav...

Abundances in stars with exoplanets

Extensive spectroscopic studies of stars with and without planets have concluded that stars hosting planets are significantly more metal-rich than those without planets. More subtle trends of different chemical elements begin to appear as the number of detected extrasolar planetary systems continues to grow. I review our current knowledge concerning the observed abundance trends of various chem...

Extreme Habitability: Formation of Habitable Planets in Systems with Close-in Giant Planets and/or Stellar Companions

With more than 260 extrasolar planetary systems discovered todate, the search for habitable planets has found new grounds. Unlike our solar system, the stars of many of these planets are hosts to eccentric or close-in giant bodies. Several of these stars are also members of moderately close (<40 AU) binary or multi-star systems. The formation of terrestrial objects in these ”extreme” environmen...

Chemical analysis of 8 recently discovered extra - solar planet host stars

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Chemical analysis of 8 recently discovered extra-solar planet host stars ⋆ Abstract. We present the chemical analysis of a new set of stars known to harbor low mass companions, namely In addition, we have also analyzed HD 13445 and HD 75289, already studied elsewhere. The abundances of C and α-elements O, S, Si, Ca and Ti are presented and discussed in the context of ...

Most 1.6 Earth-radius Planets Are Not Rocky

The Kepler mission, combined with ground-based radial velocity (RV) follow-up and dynamical analyses of transit timing variations, has revolutionized the observational constraints on sub-Neptune-sized planet compositions. The results of an extensive Kepler follow-up program including multiple Doppler measurements for 22 planet-hosting stars more than doubles the population of sub-Neptune-sized ...
